Diagenetic Processes in Aquaculture Ponds Showing Metal Accumulation on Shrimp Gills ArchiMer
Lemonnier, Hugues; Royer, Florence; Caradec, Florian; Lopez, Etienne; Hubert, Clarisse; Rabiller, Emilie; Desclaux, Terence; Fernandez, Jean-michel; Andrieux-loyer, Francoise.
The gill is the organ by which many toxic metals are taken up by crustaceans. Iron is known to precipitate at its surface, a phenomenon recently observed in some tropical aquaculture ponds. The present study uses a field approach to understand better the environmental conditions and ecological processes involved in this deposit. Because shrimp are exposed to reduced products originating from organic waste accumulated in the sediment, spatial variation in pH, redox potential and concentrations of dissolved metals in pore water were investigated in these ponds. Total organic carbon, acid volatile sulfide and pyrite were also analyzed in the solid phase. Fe2+ in pore waters showed high spatial variability between ponds and within the same pond with...

Trung Cong, Luong; Lemonnier, Hugues; Hochard, Sebastien; Royer, Florence; Letourneur, Yves.
This study was conducted to compare the effects of shrimp and rabbitfish in mono- and polyculture stocked at high biomass on production and environmental conditions in a mesocosm system. Shrimp (14 g) and/or rabbitfish (19 g) were stocked in four treatments with different density but with the same total biomass (236 g m−2), including shrimp monoculture (SM) (17 shrimp m−2), shrimp–fish polyculture (SF) (11 shrimp and 4 rabbitfish m−2), fish–shrimp polyculture (FS) (6 shrimp and 8 rabbitfish m−2) and fish monoculture (FM) (12 rabbitfish m−2). After 10 weeks of experiment, shrimp survival and biomass were low in the treatments where shrimp were dominant (SM, SF), while rabbitfish survival and biomass were high in all the treatments. Shrimp mortality was...

Feasibility of polyculture of blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris and goldlined rabbitfish Siganus lineatus in a mesocosm system ArchiMer
Luong, Trung Cong; Hochard, Sebastien; Royer, Florence; Lemonnier, Hugues; Letourneur, Yves.
The study was conducted to (1) estimate the effects of polyculture of blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris with goldlined rabbitfish Siganus lineatus on production, environmental quality and water and sediment metabolism and (2) to determine if blue shrimp and goldlined rabbitfish polyculture is possible. The experiment was carried out for 12 weeks in a mesocosm system that consisted of 12 circular outdoor mesocosm fiberglass tanks (1.7 m2, 1275 L water volume). Shrimp (2.9 g) were randomly stocked at density of 15 shrimp.m− 2 without rabbitfish (control), with rabbitfish (25.5 g) at low density (1.2 fish.m− 2) (LDRB) and high density (2.4 fish.m− 2) (HDRB). Results indicated that goldlined rabbitfish S. lineatus did not affect shrimp growth performance....

First report on amnesic and diarrhetic toxins detection in French scallops during 2004-05 monitoring surveys ArchiMer
Amzil, Zouher; Royer, Florence; Sibat, Manoella; Fiant, Liliane; Gelin, Muriel; Le Gal, Dominique; Francoise, Sylvaine.
In the context of the French phytoplankton and phycotoxins monitoring network (REPHY), shellfish scallops were harvested systematically during the authorised fishing season for the purpose of investigating paralytic toxins (PSP-mouse test), amnesic toxins (ASPchemical analysis), and lipophilic toxins (DSP-mouse test). For all shellfish samples that tested positive in the DSP mouse bioassay used for lipophilic toxins detection, liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used to search for the following lipophilic toxins: okadaic acid, dinophysistoxins, pectenotoxins, azaspiracids, yessotoxins, spirolides, and gymnodimine. In order to investigate the presence of okadaic acid esters (DTX3), alkaline hydrolysis was performed on all...

First report on azaspiracid and yessotoxin groups detection in French shellfish ArchiMer
Amzil, Zouher; Sibat, Manoella; Royer, Florence; Savar, Veronique.
The French Phytoplankton and Phycotoxins monitoring network (REPHY) recently found positive or dubious negative shellfish samples using lipophilic toxins mouse bioassay. These samples were analyzed by liquid chromatography (LC) in combination with mass spectrometry (MS) to detect the following toxins: okadaic acid (OA), dinophysistoxins (DTXs), pectenotoxins (PTXs), azaspiracids (AZAs), yessotoxins (YTXs), spirolides (SPXs) and gymnodimines (GYMs). Over the 2006-2007 period, chemical analyses revealed various lipophilic toxin profiles according to shellfish sampling locations. In addition to OA and/or PTX-2 and their derivatives, several other compounds were found for the first time in France: (1) during the summer of 2006, AZA-1 and AZA-2 in Queen...

Maldi mass spectrometry imaging applied to small molecules localization ArchiMer
Guitton, Yann; Mondeguer, Florence; Nicolau, Elodie; Royer, Florence; Hilbert, Jean-louis; Fournier, Isabelle; Wisztorski, Maxence.
MALDI Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MALDI-MSI) is a two-dimensional MALDI mass spectrometric technique used to visualize the spatial distribution of a large variety of biological molecules (from small metabolites to large proteins) without extraction, purification, separation or labelling of biological samples. Since its introduction by Caprioli et al in 1997, it has become one of the most important molecular histology methods for biomarker hunting and for understanding the spatial distribution of biomolecules in various tissues. MALDI-MSI is thus ideal for complementing the expanding field of metabolomics. Despite the fact that MALDI-MSI have been very successfully applied in divers studies (even in clinical applications) its use remains far from routine,...

Study seeks candidates for blue shrimp polyculture in New Caledonia ArchiMer
Luong, Cong Trung; Hochard, Sebastien; Royer, Florence; Lemonnier, Hugues; Letourneur, Yves.
Seasonal pathologies reduce the profitability and sustainability of the shrimp-farming industry in New Caledonia. A study was therefore conducted to estimate the effects of polyculture of blue shrimp with goldline rabbitfish or mullet on production performance and environmental quality. The fish did not affect shrimp production, and the combined shrimp/fish yields were significantly greater than the yield from shrimp monoculture. Changes in environmental quality in all treatments were few and minor throughout the culture period.

Temporal variability of benthic-pelagic coupling in shallow enclosed environment: A case study with eutrophying shrimp ponds ArchiMer
Hochard, Sébastien; Royer, Florence; Hubert, Morgane; Lemonnier, Hugues.
The evolution of benthic pelagic coupling was followed in two semi-intensive shrimp ponds in New Caledonia, with a special emphasis on the role of microphytobenthos (MPB). Three distinct periods could be identified. During the first period, MPB activity led to relative decoupling between the water column and the sediment, both compartments being autotrophic with low nutrients exchanges. During the second period, the sediment operated at the edge of a functional switch between autotrophy and heterotrophy. The amplitude of nutrient fluxes depended of the pool considered (DIN, DIP) and showed light dark variation. In the last period, sediment switched to heterotrophy with the establishment of benthic-pelagic coupling concomitantly to a massive sediment...
